Let’s take a few moments to discuss the topic of progress. The type of "external progress" that shows up on the newsfeeds of Facebook and IG. Of the last few strategy sessions I've held, there has been an underlying theme of 'feeling' like there's a lack of progress happening.
If you’re feeling frustrated because it seems like everyone around you is having the best year of their life (especially success in their business) -- yet here you are trying to figure out why it hasn't happened for you...or if it even will, then this post is for you.
This is a frustrating place to be, no matter if you are in start up or seasoned in your field. For me, it looked like one day I would be in the trenches excited checking items of my to-do list, and next I’d see “success” all around me -- and out of nowhere I'd become insecure. I'd doubt my vision, and doubt if it was even worth carrying out, because everyone else was wayyyyy ahead of me.
The first thing you have to do when you catch yourself in a moment like this is; recognize you are out of alignment.
You’ve left your lane, and something deeper is going on than anything within your business.
Next, work through this next steps to get your mind right, and to get back on a more strategic path:
Hack #1. Stop Comparing yourself!
We've all heard that "Comparison is the thief of joy" -- but it's the thief of progress too. When you become soo focused on the lives and business of others, you lose sight of your vision for your own.
While it is important to celebrate the wins of others with an expectant heart -- you must be able to do so without doubting yourself. If you can’t, then remove the temptation; unfollow the accounts, delete the apps and/or get off the mailing list. @@Create space for yourself.@@
Hack #2. Master your mindset aka shift your focus
Once you get sucked into comparing and "keeping up" with the lives/businesses of others -- it gets hard to find your center again. Most successful entrepreneurs have some sort of morning routine. This is the intentional habit of starting each day affirming yourself, your business and your vision. There are a myriad of activities you can include, in the Startup Suite Coaching Program, I share the “Aspired” Routine for Mindful Mornings and there’s also this book here or this article here.
Bottom line, @@get into the habit of taking ownership of your energy and focus for your day from the very start.@@
Hack #3. Know Your Numbers
Until this point we’ve discussed what to do when you get caught up in comparisons, and lose sight of your progress. But we haven’t talked about how to avoid getting to this point in the first place. It’s really quite simple. @@It's easy to get caught up in what others are doing, especially when you don’t know really know what you;re doing in the first place@@. It goes beyond checking items off of a your to-do list. You need real targets and you need hard data. Without tangible goals it’s easy to float from day to day, activity to activity chasing vanity metrics. You know exactly what these are, likes, follows, retweets -- things that don’t (always) literally translate into dollars and cents. I can devote entire posts to metrics that matter, but for today, repeatedly checking your IG posts for likes (especially if not tied to a goal) is pointless.
And honestly, if it don’t make dollars -- it don’t make sense. (get it? Don’t blame me, blame Dj Quik)
Hack #4. Stop trying to do it all alone
An African proverb that I think of often says, @@“If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”@@
Ask any of your favorites and you will always hear the same advice. When you are serious, you get a coach. Yes it takes a village -- but it takes quality support. When I got a coach, it changed how I invested in my business and my progress was both tangible and exponential. No more signing up for every last mailing list freebie and showing up to every free webinar. I became a better steward of my time, my money and my energy. I wanted a quality business, so from that point forward I made quality investments.
Whenever you feel yourself start to slide, check in with your mindset first. So often we want to look outside of ourselves, but with a little intention and awareness you can get everything back in order.
If you've made it this far and decide your mindset needs a little more work, there's a class for that. There's more articles on the blog you can check out, and there's a free email course you can take. If you still can't get enough Join the Facebook group for weekly discussions and support (&more!) and after that...
