Often we think if we are better stewards of our time, then we will experience the success we seek. But it’s deeper than that, yes we have to make time/space to get work done — but that’s the last step in the equation.

“Productivity” seems like the catchall solution to getting ahead in business. Does these questions sound like you, or someone you know?

These questions or some form can be found all over your fave entrepreneur groups. But the answers 🤦🏽‍♀️… It's either a collection of "fast track to burnout" suggestions, or rehashing of a super personal entrepreneurial story -- that can't be duplicated.

Productivity seems like the catchall solution to getting a head in business, but, productivity isn't about doing more in less time, it isn't about time management --- it's about task management. It's summarized in three steps:

First things, first — your mindset. Your personal limitations will be the limitations your business experiences. Understanding yourself, your real why, what drives you, what limits you etc — will make you that much stronger of a leader for your business.

The first step in being more productive is to get your mind right. There are a few hacks, that will help you get aligned before getting to work.

What Are You Working Towards — What is Your Plan?

Now that you’re mind is right, it’s time to consider where you are going. It’s important to start with the end in mind. It’s easier to build a plan, and work back from your big vision.

Do this by creating a strategic plan for your business. Then, allow this document to help dictate your monthly, weekly and daily activities. This way you will always be on track to making progress. Periodic self assessments (like a mid year check in) will help you see if a pivot or adjustment is needed.

Now, It’s Finally Time to Make Your Schedule!

It’s easier than you think!

Let’s Build Your Schedule

Now, the schedule is the easy part. You know your why, you know your end goal — now you just need to write down the action items. I have my clients complete a time audit as part of The Startup Suite Coaching Program, an abbreviate version is my two task rule.

Simply stated, to create + maintain balance, each evening consider your whole life, not just your business needs.

Here’s how it works:

If your evening is a 5-6 block of time, 2-3 hours of the time should be spent on approx. 2 business tasks. The rest of the time is for maintaining your balance, with approx 2 other activities from your “daily life”. Everything from cooking dinner, gym, cleaning, paying bills etc.

Also, I have a new non negotiable for you :) should you choose to accept: Creating a new evening routine! It’s more than just getting ready for bed and thinking about the next day. I highly suggest you work into your routine the following: take time to review what’s been accomplished, draft your agenda for the next day, take 5min to straighten your place and write a quick gratitude list :) Watch how quickly things will change!

There are many other factors that impact our productivity & ability to experience the progress we strive for in our businesses.

There can be number of factors; where you are focusing your efforts, if your motivation is waning or if your even still on the right path.

The most important thing to note: productivity is usually the symptom NOT the root. Your job is to look everything in front of you and figure out the real cause.

Diminishing or lack of productivity is problematic, yes, but even more so is applying your time/focus in the wrong place, running yourself ragged, or following a plan that no longer fits your business — to name a few.

Don’t get caught up doing all the things, being busy and working for the sake of “doing something.” Create a plan & work your plan.
